Artist Statement

Jiaqing Zhang is a London-Beijing based artist whose work is mainly in the form of public space installations.

She is always thinking and worrying about human beings' survival in spirit and body. The discovery of good things being forced to disappear is a trigger for her artistic passion. It is a driving force in her life and the starting point of her creation. Her works originate from a simple desire to make people aware of their surroundings, not just the physical world but also the psychological world we live in.

She focuses on the right to leave a trace in this world, the right to be recorded. She described history as a net that people use to try to catch experiences of the world. Much is caught and much is missed and it's the thing that disappears that interests her. She suspects far more is missed than caught and more often than not the thing that is missed, because it cannot be made sensible with words, is overlooked.

Through visual allusions and metaphors, Jiaqing’s works explore contemporary issues. She believes that “being an artist is a political act”.
